WHEN TO VISIT
The primary season is April through October. March and November can be iffy, especially in higher elevations. Winter months can be cold and snowy, but there are some days warm enough to ride, hike, or sight-see. Car visitors can have the roads to themselves in winter. The rain/snow during the “off-season” can make the local waterfalls especially inviting to explore.
Many summer afternoons bring widely scattered rain showers. Often the weather stations and web weather will indicate rain for the entire area. BE AWARE that you can still have nearly a full day of exploring time before the summer showers hit in mid-afternoon. And these showers are here and there …. not everywhere. They often dissipate or get broken up in the higher elevations in the late afternoon leaving several hours of good exploring time before dark.

SAFETY & LAWS
Many of the roads such as The Gauntlet, Tail of the Dragon, the Cherohala Skyway, and Six Gap are patrolled on a regular basis. At times there will be LEO (law enforcement officer) saturation for safety reasons. Smart riders can spot this and ride more cautiously. In all areas watch your speed and know that many locals are also rescue squad volunteers with radios in their personal vehicles; they will report speeders and reckless drivers.
Helmets are required in North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. The only adjoining state that doesn’t have a helmet law is South Carolina. The allure of riding in the mountains is the small towns and magnificent views over large farm lands. Be respectful of our neighbors, they like having you here.
